Sports Massage: Two types pre-event and post-event
Sports massage is geared toward the need of the athlete amateur or professional. A pre-event sports massage will focus on helping activate the muscles to get ready to perform for the athletic event. It will be used as part of the warm up phase prior to the event. Different massage strokes and speed of strokes are used to warm up muscles and increase blood flow. Some examples of pre-event massage strokes would include light percussion, quick compression and light friction. Stretching is prohibited.
A post event massage session will incorporate more of a traditional style of massage will slower strokes to induce the recovery time on muscles as well as assisted stretching. Examples of post massage strokes would include long and soothing strokes the length of the muscle, gentle kneading and light compression.
Active Release Techniques (ART) is an advance form of sports massage and can be used on muscles that are chronically tight. ART is specific in that compression and stroke is applied when the muscle is moving into the stretched or non working phase. The therapist is assisting movement while applying the compression/stroke. The client is passive and exhaling on the assisted movement. ART is highly effective for chronic muscle pain and stiffness.
